Dating from the 13th century, the castle of Herbeumont is one of the most impressive Belgian major heritage sites in Wallonia. Destroyed in 1657 by the troops of Marshal Henri de La Ferté-Senneterre, its ruins were renovated in 2010.
Its majestic towers offer a superb view of the Semois and the village, and entry is free so make the most of it!
The Commune of Herbeumont once had several shale mines from which the stone used to make slate was extracted.
A vestige of this activity, which has now disappeared, the Morépire slate quarry plunges you 25 metres underground and gives you an insight into the daily life of the scailtons (slate miners). An unmissable experience!
Information and booking:

If you want to explore the region yourself, our catalogue of walks is perfect for all abilities. We also offer customised routes and GPS devices, all free of charge.
If you’re looking for something a bit more laid back, then the dedicated sites along the Semois or Antrogne rivers are a great place to relax or have a barbecue with friends and family.
Children can even paddle in the river, safe under the watchful eye of their parents grilling sausages with a glass of rosé in hand.
Isn't life beautiful?
